It was probably the longest keep defence that I’ve participated in, it was of course rewarding, but it was long. I’d planned a lot of things for New Years Day evening, but spending the whole evening logged on until 00.15am, certainly hadn’t been one of them. Of course having AAO for the majority of the night always helps, but to give credit to Destruction, they kept plugging away, long beyond what I would have expected from a fickle population of players, and I mean both sides when I say that.
Destruction got wiped numerous times, they intern wiped us more than a few times, but for us it was a minor inconvenience since we ended up back in our keep. Which by the way, does help to make the defenders more adventurous, which was always the intention. It was a change that worked in DAOC and it works here. How many fights along the side and back of the inner keep, did we use to have before the respawn back at the keep change in 1.4? No one wanted to die before that.
There was a period around 10ish, where they were content to let us come out from the inner keep, get far enough away from the doors and do a quick turn around and crush us against our own doors. It’s one of those little bonus’ that the game has, that when you’re all trying to run away through a narrow opening, or through the keep doors, friendly collision detection becomes a bane. Yet we still like to over extend ourselves. I got caught once, and then spent the other times watching order stream back, once Destruction had snapped the trap shut. I do like to think the ability to learn, is what separates man from the animals, but not in the case of some of the order players that night. But heh, there was no real damage done.
In the end, the defense of Karak Karag was undone by Orders successful keep attack in Reikland, which left the keep insufficiently manned, but to be honest I don’t begrudge Destruction the victory, because they had been at it for 4 hours +. I did comment during the fight, that we should let Destruction take the outer wall, since you do need to reward people’s perseverance. Oh the crys of X realmer did ring forth on region chat. Obviously some of my learn-ed friends had experienced a sense of humour bypass, or maybe the concept of carrot and stick is something with which they are not yet familiar, maybe when they grow a bit of body hair (ladies excepted of course).
Now something I have noticed recently, is the amount of siege weaponry appearing on the walls of the keeps I’ve been defending. There’s barely room to take a dump in private, there’s that much kit that’s appearing on the walls. It does appear that once the walls garner a certain level of armament, it forces the other side away from the keep. Not always, but it seems like people can’t be bothered to heal through it. It’s nice to see people turning up to the fight properly armed for a change.
I do have one minor bugbear, if you’re going to assemble a piece of siege weaponry, please make sure you can be clearly clicked on. With the amount of over head damage that comes down, I’m not going to bust a gut healing you, if it takes more than a couple of seconds to try targeting you. That’s time where I can be healing someone else. So think about your position. If I have to rez you, that’s 2.5 seconds, plus healing time and that’s probably means someone else is going to disappear under a storm of damage, through your lack of poor positioning.
The only disappointment from that nights epic defense, was that I only got 1 warlord crest and 4 officer medallions for busting a gut (Lets ignore the stack of RP’s for a moment, this is meant to be a hard luck tale). I had previously thought it was based on involvement in the defense, or the value of the pot built up during the period prior to the zone flip. It’s just a little bit of a sore point. I could do with a little bit more love from the game where that was concerned. If I had flown to Reikland for about 20 mins of my time, I would have received 20 medallions & 5 warlord crests. Maybe I’m just a bit unreasonable, but to be honest it was the only blot on the copy book for the evening.
The following night was a completely different ball game, with 3 zone flips and a ruck of crests from those (15 is a ruck btw). Still not even close to a city seige kicking off though.
This christmas has been pretty good and I’m hoping to hit R66, by mid Jan now, moving forward my schedule by a couple of weeks. It’s good to have targets, especially when you’ve no bonus payments resting on them.
What seems very apparent on Karak Norn, is that city sieges during the prime time hours 7 – 10pm are as rare as rocking horse droppings.
