I have to be honest, it’s beginning to grind me down. Since the early part of this week, I’ve been experiencing chronic lag in the evenings. Where whole groups of people will stay still/vibrate and then repop somewhere else. I’ve even crossed halfway over Praag only to repop back in Martyrs Square dead, looking up at a bunch of Destruction standing over my cooling corpse. If I heal, I’m not even sure if the hp% bar is even an accurate representation of that person’s health, that’s assuming that the person is still in range.
What’s interesting is that this lag is happening in scenarios, which we all know is the one place you can safely go when zerg lag/server performance is bothering you.
So I’m nearly 100% sure it’s a network problem, but not one in which packet loss is a factor. Now it looks like packet loss, in the way it’s behaving, but there aren’t the disconnects which you’d normally associate with packet loss. What’s interesting is that tracert/ping/ping path are all coming back clean. Good performance all the way up to the EA network. It’s like the network data is being held up and then released in a flood, which spams my screen with lots of information. As someone wiser than me pointed out, ping traffic isn’t the same as Warhammer network traffic and just because the pings are coming back fine, doesn’t mean your Warhammer data is being handled in the same manner. Of course time of the day is factor here, it’s all happening in the evening.
Of course I’ve spent the week disabling add-on’s to see if it’s one of them, but after I was still caught up in this crap on Friday night, with no add-on’s running, it left me in no doubt it was something that wasn’t under my direct control.
Now I don’t normally hit the forums unless I’ve run out of options, but by Friday night I had reached that threshold. I first of all decided to hit the official server forums for Warhammer . In doing so I came across this thread.
Which brought to my attention that it seemed that people with this particular problem seemed to be using Virgin Media as their ISP (ASDL/Cable). Now I think it’s to early to jump to any conclusions, since I don’t want EA Mythic not to look at their internal routing, since there may well be a problem there. I doubt it, but I’d like someone to make an effort. If anyone with any clout in Mythic (If can you ignore some of my harsh words last week) can nudge EA Germany to contact Virgin Media (One of the largest ISP in the UK) to help them understand your Warhammer client, it would be greatly appreciated by your miserable Virgin Media UK players.
Anyway the more I look, the more it seems to be a ISP issue, which has been affecting all of the MMOs, like WoW, Warhammer Online, Aion. Obviously WoW got a quick fix, a couple of days into the problem, but as a player of Warhammer I don’t seem to rate so highly. I’ve been pounding the forums in an effort to get some Warhammer love.
Now I do wonder if the problem for the players has been self-inflicted by the game companies. Why I hear you ask, well it’s to do with how the clients operate in respect to patching/downloading. As you may or may not know, WoW has the functionality to operate in P2P mode in respect to pre patching, so Blizzard release a patch, like 4.01 before the release date and allow all their clients to P2P this patch around. Now we all know what ISP’s think about “Illegal P2P”, well I wonder if this got WoW included in the naughty list?
Also with Warhammer if you are on a trial account, it does a continuous download of all the game while you play, effectively pre loading content, which as a user we don’t have any control over. It just does it, we can’t change times, we can’t change ports. It just goes away and does its thing. Obviously if it’s working in the prime time, it would probably be flagged as another naughty child. Again all guess-work on my part.
What really gets my goat, is that I’ll not see a fix before Wednesday and tonight is only the 2nd night of the Team Conclave + Friends RVR night and I expect to be as much use as a chocolate fireguard with my current issues. Not much change from normal my guildies would say, but I like to show willing. Of course it had to happen on a 50% bonus weekend, I really think the world is against me, sniff, sniff.
Mood : Really Arsed OFF.
Technical support for my ISP AAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH. Smacking head against wall repeatedly. I know they have to work through the process and have to start from the lowest common denominator, but it’s really driving me up the wall.
I’d like to thank InHuman344 for this post. Which allowed me to find out the IP Address for Karak Norn under Windows 7. If you follow his very simple instructions you will see the screenshot below and you will be able to tracert to your server. Remember you will not be able to ping devices within the EA network. You can normally ping up to the last hop prior to your traffic entering their network.
