If there is one thing that seems to be causing more fat to be chewed, than anything else at the moment, it’s the RVR Progression pack. Below we have the brief description of it’s core function, which is all we have to work with at this time.
The Progression Pack gives players an opportunity to advance through the Renown Ranks faster and advance their character up to Renown Rank 100! This includes access to all bonuses, items, and rewards that are gated by the expanded Renown Ranks.
Fair enough I suppose. Now there is one itty bitty line further down in the 1.4 patch notes that’s causing a lot of consternation among the players who are currently aware of it.
* Players that have purchased the Progression Pack will find that their Renown gain has been boosted for Renown Ranks 0-80.
Now I already knew of this renown boost for this particular range of ranks, but I think like many others had “assumed” that it would be across the board. Not specific to the people who had bought the RVR Progression pack. It would effectively be creating the haves and have-nots, on one of the things I hold closest to my chest, RP gain. A real hot potato.
The problem I have, is that I can see it from both sides of the coin. Mythic have an add-on to sell, which at the moment seems very light on actual substance. Yes we have the extra realm ranks, yes we have more armour and weapons, but what else is actually in this pack? Not a lot it seems. So for the majority of people they could actually hold fire on the purchase of the add-on until they actually, if every hit 80 (The current RR cap). There is no hook for the average player. However accelerated RP gain, now that is a hook, especially if it’s sweet enough. 20 – 30% gain would be very nice and I’d pay for it. Of course given the prices for the fluff in the EA store at the moment, I’m not sure I’d be able to afford it.
From the player’s point of view, you have a situation where Mythic are making something a mandatory purchase. I’m sure people are feeling that they are being held over a barrel on this pack, how can they not buy it? This subject actually makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable, I’m not happy about these seemingly strong-arm tactics. Lets hope the RVR Progression pack is going to be firmed up with a bit more substance soon, so it’s an easier sell.
Personally I’d like Mythic to change their mind on this, but can understand if they don’t, especially if they feel that the RVR Progression hasn’t got enough value without it. If Mythic do change their mind, then I’d have to ask why did they walk down this path in the first place, if they’re now willing to change their mind?
Now on the subject on RRs being limited to the RVR progression pack, I’m clearer on this. Not a problem. WoW control the levels that your character advances to via the add-on’s, so does pretty much every other MMO. So not really sure what people are getting so worked up about it. There is a clear demarcation line of this subject.
If we look at what is coming in 1.4 and what’s not yet been announced, it’s a lot and it seems at the moment even more detail is actually leaking out via twitter ( The Price Of Wargh) and it’s all part of the subscription fee. You know what it’s pretty good. Of course it doesn’t compare to WoW and cataclysm, but the companies are of completely different scale (Blizzard is now 4000+ and growing).
This whole issue it probably a storm in a teacup. A bit of bad judgement on the part of Mythic, but I’ve kind of got use to it. They are truly the company that likes to go 2 steps forward 1 step back. Thankfully that’s only in the PR arena. In my humble opinion the game still gets better by the quarter (Cough server/add-on performance cough). Hell if they didn’t do these silly ass things, what would I get to whine about.
EDIT : Grabbed this news from Werits, the price for both RVR packs is $15 ($10 for the first one) and I have to be honest, that will have taken the wind from peoples sails (Mine included). Good aggressive pricing. Very pleased. This is the webpage on the Mythic site. I just need to know when they are going live with it. It can’t be long. As I think was intended by Mythic, this leaves me in a very upbeat mood. +1 to warhammer steiner.
Oh yes and as if by magic, the producers letter is out. If it wasn’t Mythic I’d say they planned that.
