Lets be honest we all love the double rps, but it really is a double-edged sword. Last night was the start of the weekend and it was absolutely humming on Karak Norn. At some points we had 350+ in Chaos Wastes, probably a 2:1 split in favour of Order, but with enough Chaos to be a real threat if your were caught in the open in a single warband. It was the first time that I maybe saw the vision that Mythic had at the start of the development of this MMO. War was everywhere, you couldn’t move 200 units, before you came across another battle. Not a fight, a battle.
Unfortunately the limitations of the hardware, mainly server as I have said before, turned it all into a bit of a slide show at times. Yep, my high-end client was about as much good as a chocolate fireguard in these cases. It got so bad, I couldn’t even rotate my character. If I dropped into a scenario, or respawned after one of my many deaths than it was fine, but the game would sometimes hit a point where it couldn’t cope and from that point forward it was untenable, in terms of playability. It’s a great shame really, that the game has this point where it all goes to shit.
I know I’ve said this before, but maybe we were lucky this game wasn’t a huge success, because I’m not sure how Mythic would have coped with the problem, magnified across many many servers. RvR is the endgame, there isn’t anything else really. If Wintersgrasp in WoW was sucking for you, then you could jump ship to a game of musical chars, in raid form. Maybe the extra revenue could have been used to improve the servers used to power the game? But since we don’t really know the hardware that used for the backend, we don’t really know whether there is room for growth. I would have to assume there is.
Apart from the negativity about the performance, which I think I’m entitled to, given I’ve done everything my end to ensure a smooth playing experience, e.g. I7 920, 6GB DDR3 memory, Radeon 5850 and 300GB raptor (Last piece of the puzzle to replace). It was a great evening for RPs. Level 53.75 to 54.75 on Laminar, which means I’m very close to being able to wear my Invader chest piece and dump the devastor one, that currently resides there.
The fact we had overwhelming numbers made sure the zone flip points were going our way, though I thought Chaos did a bloody good job with their 4/5 warbands to hold off the rolling thunder that was the Order Zerg. I think the Against All Odds was helping them stick it out, since if you manged to catch an order warband on its own, it was a smorgasbord of rps. So I think a tick in the box for Mythic with AAOs. At least last night it achieved its goal, of course the balance in numbers needs to be there to avoid a slaughterfest, especially when the numbers on each side are so large.
I ended up being on for about 3 – 4 hours on Friday, since once the sniff of double rps was in the air, I just tuned out all other distractions to achieve the max from the evening. Once we had access to the Inevitable City, I called it a day, since I really couldn’t handle another hour. I imagine that this is a weekend that the wife will not be seeing a lot of her “beloved” husband.
It’s good to be playing again.
