Now I’m going to be upfront and say, I’m not sure that this is a good thing. If we can forget for a minute about GOA’s crappy Warhammer website and look a little bit deeper into why this is all happening?
GOA could have decided that they no longer wanted to be in the MMO hosting business, it’s not in their business model anymore, especially after DAOC went across the pond. Though no company I know of would offload a money spinning operation. Maybe the costs of running the Warhammer MMO weren’t justified by the number of subscriptions remaining in Europe. If you set up a business for the number of servers we had originally, then it’s got to hurt with the numbers they have now.
Maybe EA had a hand in this? They want to increase their margins and paying someone else to host it and take a cut, maybe rankled a bit much. Potentially there was a clause in the contract that allowed Mythic/EA to take control if certain conditions weren’t met (Numbers), maybe GOA wanted to offload us at the first opportunity.
Personally, I’m not happy if my traffic is going across the pond, I’d at least like the servers to be hosted locally. Like in a country in Europe, I don’t see why my ping times should increase just so someone can make a few extra pounds.
Also I don’t want to start losing our servers in the evenings when the patch upgrades are done (Morning in the US), that’s assuming the European servers/data get moved to the US. Split the upgrade, so each group is done in their respective quiet times.
When I read a post a while back about Mythic looking for French and German speakers, it did raise an eyebrow and the possibility of what has happened did occur to me. I should have written something.
