So when I logged in on Saturday evening with Laminar my newly created BW, I had a plan of action, submerge myself in the New User Experience (NUS). Simple enough even for a halfwit like myself. Unfortunately I had forgotten my leveling strategy for this, my 4th character, ORvR and scenarios all the way to the top. Well obviously this created a bit of a dilemma. If I experienced the NUS, I could well acquire some PvE xp merely through following some of the initial advice. Lets not sully my pure ORvR goal before I had even gained a level.
So to avoid this crisis, I ran with my eyes semi shut (obviously virtually), all the way to the war camp outside New Emshrank. Managing to avoid too many unintended xp gains and all that hard work by Mythic, oops. I did manage to cry “Loser” to a couple of wolves I passed along the way. How lucky they were, not to feel my fiery wrath and it was fiery after the earlier server crash (All the other servers were showing in the server selection box).
Okay, I did see a couple of screens from the New User Experience pop up as I moved to the tier 1 ORvR lake, but swift clicks of the mouse soon removed them. I know I was going to have a look at them in the future, but needs must and my need was to fry people or at least try to. I needed to vent my spleen after my earlier frustrations, but more importantly I wanted to know how the performance changes were shaping up.
On the trip down to New Emshranks, I adjusted my gfx settings to Quality. It was nice to have them back up near the top of the image settings, after being so long set to Performance. Yes you do notice the differences. Things just seem better all around. Lighting effects were back in and sometimes just the little things can make me happy. Now I did notice that when I set the game to Quality, Warhammer actually set the texture memory utilisation to 0/100 (I have a 768MB Nvidia 8800GTX). So I’m not sure if that’s a bug, but I’ll probably send something in, when I next get on. Now this all counted for nothing, if it couldn’t maintain a decent FPS in ORvR, even the smaller scale stuff of tier 1.
You know what, the initial impressions are good. Okay the numbers on the screen were not comparable to the tier 4 keep sieges, but I have to say it’s a half thumbs up for the Mythic code monkeys. Of course I will need to wait until I am back on my RP or KotBS before giving it a complete thumbs up. It must be really nice when you make changes which produce truly tangible results.
While on the subject of the performance improvements, I did notice a drop off in frame rate towards the end of a session on sunday night, which was about 2 – 3 hours long. Now it could be down to me alt tabbing during the evening, but it definitely slowed down.
It’s very strange playing a BW, after the KotBS, simply because the BW crumples under the slightest fart. It’s shocking how quickly the destruction tanks can cross the gap between the lines and start laying waste to the softies like myself. Never the less it’s nice to adopt a different play style, even if only for a while.
Still, I was the only one from my guild on Warhammer over the weekend , though tier 1 was humming in New Emshrank. Also, there seemed to be a lot of people in the /advice channel asking noobie questions. So maybe we do have more new people joining than I previously supposed. Fingers crossed.
