I’m sure we all remember the furore there was when 4 of the 6 capital cities were dropped during beta, in move which basically kept the launch of Warhammer on track. To say it was seen as a bit of a betrayal, would be a mild understatement, but which dovetails me nicely onto todays subject matter. Now a couple of days ago, Krosuss in one of his mighty comments, alluded to a desire to see the return of the MIA capital cities, which got me thinking.
Do I actually want to see the return of the missing capitals cities, or even see the need for them to return? The short answer is no, at least not in the foreseeable future, 6 – 12 months. There is so much more to be done to the core of the game, that would benefit from those valuable resources. I appreciate the design and construction of these structures would be undertaken by different teams from within Mythic, and I suppose you never know they may be short of work.
Obviously you also have the issue of how to fit these 4 new capital cities into the current game mechanic. I suppose you could either randomise which capital city was going to be sacked, or just do it on a round robin basis. Though saying that, we could go back to the original vision, which was a multi front war, where a capital city in each racial pairing, could be in the process of being sacked at any one time. Have we got actually got populations to support that and would it even work from a game play aspect? It’s an intriguing possibility, but again not one I would like to follow up at this time. I would just be concerned that once one capital was taken, then that side would just break off the attack on the other capital and just join the rest of their realm, sacking the first capital. Anything for an easy life eh?
But also what do we actually gain from having 4 more capitals? Obviously artistically they would be different and a change of scenery is always pleasant, but I already find Altdorf a bit lifeless as it is. A buffing up of the current capital cities would be a more worthy pursuit, lets get some zip back into those cities, maybe a few more coffee shops, a boulangerie, outdoor pools. I mean how much of the real estate of our capital cities, seems to come solely from the need to support the pitched battles, during the city takes. Take that out of the equation and then factor in the actual content of those cities, then a shrinkage wouldn’t be unwarranted.
This intern got me onto thinking about capital cities in general. Do they actually serve a real purpose, I mean at least in Warhammer, you get to sack them, which is significantly more use than can be had with either it’s DAOC and WoW equivalents. Sure they look artistically very impressive, but I still feel they lack a certain something. Now this isn’t a side swipe at just Warhammer, but I’ve felt this about DAOC and WoW capital cities before. The only reason I would go to Origmnar would be to use the auction house or some other minor dignitary. But I suppose that is a modern day capital city, a place where many things come together, yet is ultimately soulless.
EDIT : Had the wrong link to Krosuss’s comment. Sorry about that, I really thought I had checked it.
