When I first wrote this down as a topic, I was still resident on my original server and had yet to be touched by the Mythic/GOA population compression software WinWar. So in my mind, against all the evidence I still imagined things moving forward and maybe, just maybe the populations growing again. But what is effectively an enforced move from one of the prime launch servers, tends to set a mood that is a bit hard to shake, it has a certain finality about it. I’m sure in a couple of days I will be over it, once I am on a really busy server and my frame rate is back down in the dungeons of despair.
So what I will discuss here, is kind of moot, since I am not sure we will ever see an expansion of the server numbers again. So Mythic creating a server type for this particular purpose, would be kind of self defeating.
However, for the sake of argument and I’ll be dammed if I am going to throw away the subject. What would you say to the warband grouping being dropped all together, leaving the 6 character group at the top of the tree?
I know the warband is a rather comforting blanket that you can wrap around yourselves in ORvR, but doesn’t it make you a little bit lazy or maybe you have felt that some people really haven’t been pulling their weight, though to be honest how can you really tell? Yep I know it’s great when a few guildies turn up and you can just rejig the groups, or maybe just slot a few in on the end, without worrying too much about them not having a healer in their group, since they can still be easily healed.
Getting rid of the warband means you’re really going to have to work. No more jumping into the masses and hoping your shocking performance is missed again. Everybody in the group has to be pulling in the same direction, with the same ultimate goal. Yes, you would be right to expect a rollicking and no more group invites, if you’re stuck halfway up a mountain side, in a 1 on 1, with no resolution in sight and your healer taking the thrashing of his life.
Yep with a warband, you can deal with a few people not being around, as is often shown on the map, when a warband member is so far away, they’re in another time zone. Unfortunately the Warhammer interface still doesn’t tell you if they’re in your group, unless you highlight the blob and check to see if there in your group (FFS Mythic colour the blobs for each group in the warband, so we can tell instantly who’s done a bunk behind the bicycle shed for a smoke).
If the group were to become the biggest unit of people supported by Warhammer, then I would like to think that zerging would be tad harder to happen. Of course you would still have large gatherings, but they would tend to be around the focal points, like forts, warcamps and keeps. Maybe we should get group speed into the game, provided by a particular archetype. It would surely help break up the zergs, especially if they were travelling at different speeds.
As you can probably tell, I think the warband is directly responsible for a lot of the mindless zerging the game has, though zone layout also plays a big part. Yes we had zerging in DAOC, but it tended to occur around fortifications/bridges etc. The rest of the landmass used to be free and open. Maybe to free and open for Mythic’s taste. I wouldn’t totally disagree about.
What do people think? Am really just blowing smoke out of my ass?
PS – After the Norn server transfers, Eldric is no more, only the mighty Eldriche exists.
