Okay it’s been a while since I have mentioned any films here, but I have actually seen a couple of decent ones recently.
One is the made in South Africa, District 9, which starts off in a slightly comedic vein, then changes to a more action orientated base further on. The lead actor has a manner which does make you want to laugh at him, so the action is sometimes tinged with a hint of comedy.
Now one thing to mention is that the English is spoken with an Afrikaans accent, which can be tricky to follow. I was sitting next to a couple of South Africans and I definitely reckon there were a couple of jokes I missed.
Some of the weapon effects are truly excellent, with a definite bond forming with with the lightning gun. I also never thought I would feel affection for the prawns, but I imagine that was the intention from the start. The old saying, that you “Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover”, is definitely the underlying message here.
The other film was The Hurt Locker, which is all about an American bomb disposal expert in Iraq. It’s not really an action based film, nor a thriller, it’s a little hard to categorise. Never the less it was a good film and time well spent, which is always good. I still have nightmares about sitting through Batman And Robin.
