I’ve had a couple of stabs at this particular subject and each time I wasn’t quite convinced I had adopted the correct tack. So I moved my previous attempts to one side and had another go at trying to convey my feelings on this particularly thorny subject.
To put it simply, the CC in Warhammer is irrelevant, it offers no real value to the game, apart from a few amusing situations, when you punt someone off a cliff. Whoopee do. In my eyes it’s the equivalent to a console games version of CC, which trust me, isn’t a compliment. However lets put a nice tick in the game designers box for CC.
By the time you have reached tier 4, it has somehow achieved the twin peaks of being both overwhelming and meaningless. I don’t even bother to look at what’s annoying me most of the time, I merely sit there like a lemon, waiting for this irrelevant piece of CC’s timer to run out. Hell, I sometimes don’t even get to press my purge ability before it’s vanished.
I honestly feel the majority of the CC in the game has no real skill involved, it’s just fired off. Spam spam spam. Because most of it, just exists for such a short period of time, the support characters don’t have to do anything to ward off it’s effect. By the time they could cast something anyway, it’s expired. Maybe for Mythic that’s the point, to relegate a whole class of spells/abilities to the void.
Now this isn’t to say that it can’t be used effectively, but it’s not that often. As a level 20 knight, I have a snare strike, a morale ability to lock people down for 10 seconds and a knockback. Most of that I merely use to strip destruction off the order soft targets, like the casters or healers. That does of course require the order player to actually move away out of danger, of course. The snare is often an opening strike to make sure a destruction target can’t get to far away.
How many times have you had a group of you taking down a target and some halfwit on your side performs a knockback. You are left screaming into your monitor, who’s the f$#k$ing B$%£ard who did that. I maybe being overly harsh to my own side and it could be someone executing “Get Behind Me” or whatever the equivalent ability is.
I know that people found CC in DAOC a bit annoying, but it nearly always had it’s counters. If you were mezzed, you could still purge the effect (A purchased Realm Ability) and have the immunity for 2 minutes or have a healer de-mezz you. The stuns were upto 9 seconds. You could be rooted in a spot for a minute, but you could still make casts (see below for tanks). If anyone cast or hit you, then the root or mezz would be broken. With the amount of AOE in warhammer at the moment, those wouldn’t stay up for long.
Tanks had imbuilt cc reduction capabilities and could use realm abilities to reduce it even further. So there was a counter to most CC. The other benefit to having just 3 forms of CC, is that regardless of the realm that had cast/used the spell/ability. There were just 3 icons to learn.
The healers had a part to play in getting the groups up and running as soon as possible, by demezzing. Each side had to be clever in it’s selection of targets, so to maximise the free time the CC had provided. Regardless of the CC used, once that type of CC had been used on you and had been broken or had timed out, you had immunity for 2 minutes. Some of the fights would last so long, that you could end up remezzing people a couple of times.
What pains me as an ex DAOC player, is that people complained about the CC in that game, yet if I asked them now which they would prefer now, I would be disappointed if they said Warhammers.
Also quality CC, allowed smaller groups, to effectively fight against the larger ones, especially if the larger groups played like chumps. If only DAOC hadn’t had population problems on the English speaking euro servers, I would imagine a lot would have gone back. But Warhammer is the future for now. The one big tick that I would give Mythic, is that they aren’t afraid to change stuff if it doesn’t work.
So just like DAOC had a newly worked Realm Ability list that came in with DAOC’s new frontiers, so lets hope for something of that nature in the future for Warhammer.
On that happy note, I am off to grab a cup of decaf. I can’t help it, the coffee shop was doing it for half price and in these economic times you have to be careful. I wouldn’t want my internet connection being cut, for the sake of a few cups of coffee. Honestly though, it would be a cold day in hell before I lost my internet connection.
