I am starting to have mixed feelings about the warband. On one level, they are a great concept. You log on, you see the guild is running a warband and you just join in. No longer do you have, sorry mate, the groups full. Brilliant, all problems sorted.
Well not exactly. Is the warband too powerful in ORvR, especially when it’s been careful constructed? Does it work against the main aims of Open RvR, which is, that it’s open to all? These optimised warbands just start moving in one direction and start chewing through their enemy like a lawnmower cutting through grass. You create a nice base of a few tanks, make a softer filling of choppas and a sprinkling of casters, then top it off with a nice crust of healers and cook for 30 minutes. Why worry about single target, if you can just throw 5 choppas at the front and start to unload. Please swap slayers for choppas and you will get the view from the destruction side.
From a healing point of view, it’s just a mass of flat liners within the first moments of combat. Average time to kill … let me think … oh yes, the time it takes for my screen to refresh 1 frame, which given the engine we are using, can be 1 – 5 seconds in heavy combat. I know it’s an exaggeration, but you know what I am saying isn’t that far from the truth.
You see the warband has helped create/maintain the zerg, which intern has created the counter zerg, which then creates a whole miriad of performance issues and one sided combats. The group, is just a scenario thing, let’s go raid a dungeon, fantastic.
I did wonder, why the Alterac Valley scenarios in WoW never bothered me as much as Warbands have. It finally dawned on me, that it’s because they are so transitionary. So yes, you may win a one off combat and the rewards are relatively minor amount of honour points. In warhammer a warband is so much more long term, than a 15 minute scenario.
So has the warband actually been a positive or negative addition to Warhammer?
PS – I am still waiting for the warband leader to be coloured differently to the rest of the people in the warband, so you know where to go when you need to move out. Not exactly a difficult change, but very useful.
