No matter my grumbles, you have to admit that Mythic are a bit like a dog with a bone, they just don’t want to admit defeat (Not that they can afford to). When I heard about 1.3 being released in June, my initial thought was, that this was a pretty big gap between major releases. The PR department would have to work hard, trying to keep Warhammer in the public eye.
So when the initial release notes for 1.2.1 were dropped down from warhammer control, I have to admit I wasn’t overly optimistic about there being much in there for me. So I was a wee bit surprised at the scope of this .1 patch. To see the keep upgrade changes bundled in there, was a nice little treat. But is this merely an indication on how Mythic view the scope of the problem in ORvR. Do they need to get this one in early? Maybe waiting till June wasn’t an option.
At the rate the game is changing in T4 and generally overall, there isn’t going to much left from the initial release that hasn’t been completely reworked or given the mandatory steriod injection. Now depending on your point of view and the spin you wish to apply, you can say that the initial design blew chunks and this is the action of a developer wailing in the wind OR a developer who recognises that the initial design has not met expectations and the game is being adjusted to further reflect the changing needs of the player base.
Personally, I would say it’s a mixture of both. The initial game blew chunks, the core rvr game was wafer thin in it’s scope, the players changed their modus operandi between beta and live, plus to top that off, you had some major management misjudgements on the release date. On that final point, you reapeth what you sow. Obviously all this is being said in hindsight, and people, myself included, are always wiser in hindsight.
However, since the release Mythic have definitely been worth a B+. They would have scored higher, but bugs still seem to creep into each release and performance is still appalling for a rather large section of the player population.
Now Mythics constant drive forward has to be admired, they can’t address all the issues that people have, but the game is moving forward at a frenetic pace. Whether it will ever change the mind of the naysayers, is a story that will only unfold with the publication of the next set of subscription figures, which I hope that they release by geographical area.
NOTE – I wrote this before the full PTS notes for 1.2.1 were released. They have turned out to be rather more far reaching than I had originally appreciated. White lions and arch mages will be happy. Also a small note to Bluesky, take a quick trip to the general RVR changes at the bottom. No more camping in a keep, awaiting a zone reset for a quick ninja retake. Hello Mr Teleporter.
