I appreciate that I have a responsibility for providing sufficient hardware for Warhammer to run on, but I believe Mythic also have a responsibility, for providing a client capable of a satisfactory frame rate during zerg warfare. I’m saying zerg warfare, since that’s what we effectively have at the moment. If the game engine isn’t up to the job, then I would like to know what the Warhammer client is realistically capable of and set my expectations accordingly.
So why am I so bloody grumpy at the moment? Well, for the last couple of nights I have been experiencing domination mode running in a couple of tier 4 zones. First off, there is nothing wrong with domination mode, it’s working pretty well. But at the moment my Warhammer client performance in zerg fighting, is frankly appalling, insta’s should be realistically re-classed as castables. It’s that bad, I am starting to find dungeons attractive, which if you know my views on the Warhammer dungeons (I have tried), gives you a handle on my feelings on this particular subject.
I am currently using the warboard FPS addon, which informs me I am running at around 6 – 9 fps in zerg mode. Now I will own up and say my hardware is less than stellar at the moment, what with running a AMD X2 4400, married to 2GB of DDR2 and a Nvidia 8800 GTX, running at 1920 x 1280. Like I said, this is hardly the cutting edge of technology. But 6 – 9 fps is not really going to give a rewarding playing experience, it’s just going to cause frustration. Things like over turning, over stepping the clift, trouble targeting players, slow dismounts etc etc.
Now if I was to invest in a platform upgrade, would I be given a performance increase that equated to the money invested or would I just be given City Of Heroes, which no matter what you threw at it hardware wise, it would never get above 30fps. I always knew with certain companies like ID and Epic, that if I gave their games better hardware I would be commensurately rewarded. I am just not so certain of that with Warhammer and Gamebyro engine.
Now obviously this brings up the further questions? Where would the money be best spent on an upgrade? New motherboard/CPU, more memory or a new graphics card. Maybe it all needs a lot of love. I am currently considering an I7 920, with 6GB and using my 8800 GTX until the generation beyond the ATI 4870 & Nvidia 280 GT comes out. But will throwing all this hardware make a tangiable difference to my Warhammer experience?
After 6 months what can or should we be expecting from the Warhammer client when experiencing end game RVR? Am I being unreasonable here? Is this game we play, that requires a lot of players to make it breath, a smooth playing technical impossibility? Now it’s important to remember, it’s not about the maximum FPS, it’s a constant minimum FPS.
Has anyone actually analysed where their performance issues are occuring? Are we looking at general CPU bottleneck, a rendering issue (GPU) or just network lag? Obviously Mythic will not come out and say that below a certain spec level, the game becomes slower than a powerpoint fadeout. If anyone has any thoughts, then please share.
I appreciate this sounds all so very petulant, but it has been putting my back up recently and thus impacting my fun.
