In my previous blog entry, I mentioned that my guild used to be focused on fighting similar sized groups in DAOC, in DAOC terms it was simply called 8 vs 8. It had a slightly negative view from some quarters, since it was considered elitist, but it was merely a different style of play.
But here’s the rub, when I log on at the moment, my guild are normally stuck in some dungeon or other. Now is this the same bunch of people who would meet up 3 times a week for a 4 hour session and happily go out and just fight other groups? If you look now, they seem to be stuck in PvEhammer. So what’s the missing X?
Now this maybe down to maturity of the population. But before you get too upset, it’s not in the context of peoples behaviour, but the amount of time the population of the servers have been together. Is this something that will develop over the coming years, or do people feel the game just doesn’t have the scope to allow it? DAOC didn’t specifically cater for this type of combat, it just formed from the primordial muck.
But could or should Warhammer be doing more to help it form? The ORvR lakes are certainly big enough for open roaming. There are small battlefield objectives scattered all over, which could be fought over. Okay maybe the BOs are a bit pointless at the moment, but they are still there. We know that Mythic are actively seeking to reduce the loading in high traffic areas, like fortresses and keeps. So maybe, just maybe the proposed alternate domination mode could be at the forefront of change.
To slightly digress onto this domination mode, that’s being refered to. It has to be more than just alternate. People will go with the path of least resistance, which means if the zerg is strong, then they will go with the flow, which will be a ruddy great big zerg upto the main keep/fortress door. This domination mode, will need to reduce the numbers in the zerg as each BO is captured and held, while providing a benefit greater than if those people had just been knocking on the doors of the keep. Yes … Magical Wards tied into the keep doors. Brilliant idea even if I do say so myself. All joking apart, once I see the main thrust of the domination mode (Team Fortress anyone) detail, I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
Are ORvR guilds being forced into PvEing merely to be effective when trying to assault the lord? So even though War is everywhere, that really only applies when you have bored yourself senseless, repeating dungeons you didn’t sign up for when you subscribed to this game. Syp put it best. As a casual player, all this says to me is “Thanks, but no thanks”.
EDIT: So I post all this, then check my guild forums and see this link – Fight Night. So that’s a DOHHH on my part.
