This piece of news may well of passed people by, but it’s potentially very significant. Warhammer is launching in Russia in February. Now Russia is a large country in it’s own right, but Russian as a language is widely spoken in many countries, obviously based around the former soviet block. Now I am not sure how much Russian is still taught outside of Russia, since a lot of countries have splintered away, but adding Russian language servers is more than just getting Russia. If anyone knows more about this, then let me know.
This is potentially a very big deal for our player base, a top of the line MMORPG in Russian. Now obviously we already will have a lot of people playing in Europe from Russia, but this could well drag in a lot more, which is obviously Mythic/GOAs intention. Now they may well not be billed as much as central europe, but it’s all generating revenue and more revenue = more development (Okay a little bit simplistic I agree).
There are the initial and ongoing translation costs, Russian speaking CSRs, new servers, website, etc etc, but this is hopefully a significant step forward in the size of the player base. It does make me wonder why Blizzard hasn’t also taken this step, since they aren’t known for being slow with initiatives focused on increasing their subscriptions. Maybe they don’t see a market large enough in Russian, to justify a language specific version of World Of Warcraft.
