Well I picked this up today from The Warhammer Alliance. It was posted by Mark Jacobs on 09/01/09, it was from a thread on those forums, so that’s why it starts out as a response.
That’s the plan. We really had two choices, do nothing in-game while we continued to work on code improvements (and risk crashing/performance issues) or try to ensure that fortress sieges would work 100% of the time (with a smaller number of participants). Before the break we had hoped that the improvements we made would eliminate all crashes but while they helped a lot, we still had too many crashes over the holidays and I could not allow that to continue. Not a choice I had hoped to make but one I’ll make every time. As the weeks progress I hope that we will be able to raise the caps so getting kicked to a warcamp will not happen as often (ever) and/or there will be other fun things to do based around the siege.
As you see, the idea is to keep raising the cap, until as I hoped, it disappears up it’s own rear end. As I previously said a few days ago, this was a necessary step, even if it leaves a slightly foul taste in the mouth. The end game needs to be seen to progressing, so people can actually experience all the content in the cities. No point in having content if no one can actually get to it. See I can be pleasant if I try.
Now the following news item was posted on the same day and is significantly more revealing about the plans for fortress takes. Make the effort and read the whole thing, the niblet below is linked back into the main article.
The first step in improving the oRvR experience of fortress taking went LIVE across all servers last night. The good news is that there were lots of fortresses captured and defended. The even better news is that there were no fortress-related crashes last night while these battles raged and were completed by the players. Performance in these battles was also improved, but still not where we want it to be of course. While this is a good start, continuing to improve the mechanisms behind these battles remains one of our top priorities now and going forward. Over the next few weeks, we will be working on a number of initiatives that I can now talk about.
The interesting bit, which is in the 2nd paragraph, is the statement that Mythic would consider moving the fortress into it’s own instance. Now I am firmly against that, since it will just end up interrupting the flow of the frontiers. If Mythic open up a 3 front war when the other capital cities return, then this will be even more unnecessary.
Regardless of that, Mythic have stated their intentions. There is still a massive amount of work to be undertaken, but of I actually have quite a bit of faith in Mythic. I can’t say I agree with everything they do and they do annoy me, but I honestly feel they are the right company to be moving Warhammer forward.
Finally, someone has hit RR80 after 59 days played, which given the number of days the game has been out, along with about 6 hours a night sleep, is quite a relentless pace. I wonder if Mythic imagined having to create a new set of ranks already.
