So last night was my first visit to Dragonwake. Now maybe it’s because it’s an Elf land or just because it’s all so god damm green, but I found it visually boring. Maybe I have yet to be seduced by it’s subtle charm. I just find that much “Green” offensive in Warhammer. It’s like being in WoW, but what’s good for WoW isn’t so good for Warhammer. At the moment it’s like a poor mans Hibernia. I find the elfen artwork to be antiseptic, seriously if you look at the art, does it look like there is a war going on? The stone work needs to be dirtied up. Make it look like these elfs are in a fight, not an episode of Town & Country.
Anyway the guys in the guild generously invited me along for some ORvR. I had already achieved a reasonable amount of PvE last night, so I thought what the hell, it will be a laugh. Now remember I am only level 30, so my survival rate will be suspect, which means I am going to need alot of healing. It’s worth remembering that when you RvR and you are below the optimal level. You are going to soak up a lot of a healers time and APs, especially if they are interested in keeping you alive. I know in WoW I used to let some of the lower ranks die in the Alterac Valley clashes, since they couldn’t realistically be kept alive. Harsh I know, but the power bar wasn’t limitless. Does this make me a evil person or just realistic?
Now it must have been a reasonable night, since the action kept me in ORvR from 11pm to 1am and in the main part it was fun. It was mainly zerg warfare, so our group was with the zerg sometimes, and off claiming BO’s when we had a free moment, since they did switch back and forth quite a lot. But it always seemed that we were always at the wrong part of the map and it took an age to get somewhere which was just a stones throw away. I think the Mythic designers went a little crazy with all their up and overs in Dragonwake.
What our little RvR session did do, is highlight the need for a good mix of DPS and healing within the group. To much healing and we couldn’t kill anything, to little and the results were obvious. I am sure when we can field a good range of level 40’s, we will be able to put together a balanced group, and it really needs to be balanced.
Within the guild there is now proper talk of an RVR night, which is good, since it now feels we are getting back into the ORvR frame of mind. What’s also good is the fact that we can add people in to the guild group and effectively expand the group into a warband, so accommodating more people as they come online. I did submit my idea for coloured groups on the mini map within a warband to GOA yesterday, so here is hoping for a bit more clarity in the interface.
Finally, the one thing I will always miss in Warhammer, is the third realm of DAOC. It added such a dynamic to ORvR that I can’t begin to describe it in words. It would have been awesome to see warbands from 3 sides pouring into the valleys last night. Realistically it cannot be added to what we have, it would be a massive project which I personally couldn’t justify. I could only hope that in some future add on, they can give us a 3rd racial pairing for the addon areas. Honestly though, I am not going to bet the house on it.
